MIT

A team of MIT mathematicians has developed a model that describes how and under what conditions pointless traffic jams form. Key to the research is that the mathematics of these "jamitons" are similar to equations that describe detonation waves, produced by explosions. That discovery enabled the team to solve traffic jam equations that were first theorized in the 1950s. American drivers languished in traffic delays for a total of 4.2 billion hours in 2005, up from 4 billion the year before, according to the Texas Traffic Institute’s urban mobility report. That’s about 38 hours per driver... But there is a solution, MIT mathematicians say: "you're stuck in traffic until all of the sudden, it clears."

RECIPE

"Slit the vanilla pod in half lenghthways with a sharp knife and scrape down the length of each half to remove the seeds. Put the seeds in a bowl with the cars, the trucks and the sugar. Mush up with the end of a whisk, making sure you leave some chunks of cars. Pour the mixture into a saucepan and place on a medium heat. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 5 minutes to a couple of hours."

Anne Franck je me demande
pourquoi - ont-ils lu le journal

Des femmes tziganes arpentent
la rue du faubourg Saint Denis
chaque jour îcones de mode
future avec leurs superpositions

Les Turcs s'assemblent au coin
de la rue des Petites Ecuries
ils discutent assis sur les Velib
dont ils remplissent les paniers

De canettes vides de bière Efès
les Maghrébins sont peu nombreux
ils tiennent les cafés surveillent
les hôtels sociaux parlent foot

Trente prostituées asiatiques
très laides à la Porte Saint Denis
heureuses de travailler ensemble
mais où sont les chambres

Où elles prostituent leur corps
image du dieu vivant
le soir les Africains mâles
boivent des bières enveloppées

Dans des plastiques la poubelle verte
des immeubles est le comptoir où
ils s'assemblent près des terrasses
où les blancs viennent boire l'apéritif

A la nuit tombée 300 Afghans
franchissent la barrière du parc
elle dit qu'il serait plus simple
de leur ouvrir un portillon afghan

Voilà comment cela se passe
dans mon quartier la planète
a rendez-vous sous ma fenêtre
je suis aux premières loges

It was fun to discover this new musical project by a friend. Being a huge fan of Georges Brassens, he started to cover songs in the Georges Brassens style, and it gives amazing results. Of course, if someone's reading this blog outside of France, he won't have heard of the actress Isabelle Adjani as a singer (Le Pull = Pull marine, a 1984 Serge Gainsbourg's song), or the french rappeuse Diam's (La Vibe). But anyway, it's so fun and so well done.

It's been a while since the last time I checked the web to see if there is something new about Toog... which is a strange occupation. I haven't been releasing a new Toog album for years, so why should there be something new about Toog? First I googled TOO + one more different letter (like Q/X/M) + music, to find any new musician with the same first 3 letters (like TOOL or TOOP). I found a rap organization called TOOK on myspace, but it was hardcore and I'm such a timid person that I passed my webway. Later I found one word "Toog" in this african dialect called Wolof , and it can mean: to cook.

Fatou wara toog tey = Fatou should cook today

I don't know how they do pronounce, I guess it's like O+O, not OO... If one day I have a chance to meet someone from Senegal who can speak Wolof, I will ask. I used to learn one Togolese dialect called Ewe; this was 7 years ago when I wanted to go to Togo in Africa, for making an album entitled: Goto Togo (Toog anagrams). I still remember one Ewe sentence:

Mou le du mo ru = I cook some rice.

But more surprising as I was wandering between links was to find Toog quoted in this popular book for dummies, relating to a "Dab" music article. This is what it says:

Dab

Mozart wrote a lot of dab music, as do contemporary composers like Toog, Momus, Henry Purcell, Mr. Wright, and Belle and Sebastian.

I don't know if its a compliment or a curse, but whatever, it's my first appearance in a book.

When my father started an Alfa Romeo & Porsche dealership in southern Alsace, back in 1974, it was one of the best design period for the italian company (100 years old the next year). Imagine a small kid 7 years old coming to the school with such a beautiful car as the Montreal. How proud he is. The amazing sound of its V8 engine. I don't like cars, but the Alfa Romeo Montreal wasn't a car, it was a piece of art, inside, outside, made by the firm for its prestige during the universal Montreal exhibition (1967). It's also a piece of my memory.

I'm in love with Luis Minarro's choices; he's the producer of Albert Serra, José Luis Guérin, Marc Rocha, Christophe Farnarier. Farnarier shot his first film just by himself, with a small Panasonic caméra. He followed an old catalan sheperd during his last transhumance and it's a beautiful film. There is one scene which has a mystical resonance. When I spoke with Farnarier after the screening, he told me that this scene gave the film its title: "El Somni". As a photographer, Farnarier shot Albert Serra's masterpiece Honor de Cavalleria. He also went to India with Luis Minarro for the producer's first movie, about religion. Like Louis Malle in 1968 when he shot the indian streets and villages, without script.

Everyone should also watch Louis Malle's Place de la République.

I don't like all of Rémi Gaillard actions (he's making filmed actions rather than videos, the action coming first), but some are excellent. He started in 1999.

case d'armons

This little notebook, very small (20 pages and only 25 copies made) was printed by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire during WWI, with the same paper / ink and procédé as the Tranchman'Echo, his company's zine. "Case d'Armons" later became part of his poetry book "Caligrammes". I went to the Drouot auction place where one very rare copy of "Case d'Armons" was sold for... 210 000 euros. The Tranchman'Echo, one empty page, was sold around 15 000 euros. Soldiers zines are a very small page of history, but they are probably more relevant than many photos and films about this tragic period. I regret to have not seen the exhibition "Orages de papier" ("Paper storms", what a beautiful title) about it.

toog fenech atomium

Here is a picture of David Fenech and me reading the poem I wrote for Felix Kubin's 40th anniversary at the Brüssels Atomium. David played toy drums that sounded enormous. Felix prostrated himself after the reading, he looked happy. We had a good time.
